Transforming a Small Carmel Garden into Two Distinct Living Spaces
Nestled in the charming neighborhood of Carmel, CA, this intimate backyard transformation showcases how thoughtful landscape design can maximize a small space while honoring cultural aesthetics. When a Japanese family approached Elemental Design, they entrusted us to create something truly special—a functional outdoor retreat that seamlessly blended their heritage with modern California living.
Mission: This Carmel residence is home to a family who values both their Japanese roots and the natural beauty of coastal California. With a small backyard that had tremendous potential, they sought a landscape designer who could understand their vision and deliver a space that felt both authentic and elevated. They found that partnership with Elemental Design.
The clients came to us with clear functional requirements: they wanted an outdoor sauna, a pergola-covered dining area, and a fire feature with comfortable seating for relaxation. But beyond these elements, they desired something deeper—a Japanese-inspired landscape design that would transform their modest, private backyard into two distinct zones: one for dining and entertaining, and another for lounging and unwinding by the fire.
The challenge? Creating separation and visual interest in a compact footprint while maintaining an organic, unforced aesthetic that honored Japanese garden principles.

Elemental’s Landscape Design Approach
Working in collaboration with the skilled craftsmen at Lewis Builders, Elemental Design developed a landscape design strategy that maximized every square foot while creating the illusion of a much larger space.
Creating Distinct Zones: The key to this Japanese-inspired landscape was establishing clear spatial separation without sacrificing flow. We achieved this by creating a raised patio for the living area and firepit, using rich Ipe decking as a visual and physical divider between the two spaces. This elevation change creates drama and definition while the warm tones of the Ipe wood add natural elegance.
The Living Area: A Fireside Retreat: The raised living space centers around a custom firepit surrounded by heated chairs from Galantar and Jones, ensuring year-round comfort in Carmel’s coastal climate. The firepit and coordinating planter pots, crafted by Archpot, provide sculptural focal points that anchor the space.
Between the dining and living areas, a carefully curated landscaping bed features a graceful Japanese maple tree and delicate ferns—plantings personally hand-selected to ensure authenticity and visual impact. Hidden behind this natural screen is a delightful surprise: an outdoor sauna that adds a spa-like element to the backyard experience.
The Dining Area: Japanese Garden Influence: The dining zone sits on a flagstone patio interspersed with river rock, a direct nod to traditional Japanese garden design. We selected flamed CT bluestone with bands of pebbles, creating the linear patterns and textural contrast characteristic of Japanese-inspired landscapes.
Overhead, a stunning pergola provides dappled shade and architectural interest. The pergola’s standout feature is its circular sawn marks from a single old growth redwood tree—a sustainable choice that tells a story and adds organic character. Suspended from the center hangs a Japanese-inspired outdoor chandelier that casts beautiful patterns in the evening hours.
The dining furniture from Azzurro was selected for its clean lines and weather-resistant durability, perfectly complementing the space’s refined aesthetic.
Lighting the Magic: Low voltage landscape lighting was strategically placed throughout the space, transforming the backyard into an enchanting evening retreat. The lighting design highlights key features—the Japanese maple, the firepit, architectural elements—while maintaining the intimate, organic atmosphere.
The Result
Upon seeing the hand-drawn plans, the clients told us they recognized true art—a testament to the power of intentional landscape design. The final implementation exceeded their expectations, delivering a low-maintenance, magical space that genuinely allows them to live outside.
This Japanese-inspired landscape design successfully transformed a run-down, uninspired backyard into an at-home health oasis that feels exponentially larger than its actual footprint. The two distinct spaces provide versatility for both entertaining and quiet relaxation, fundamentally elevating the family’s lifestyle.
By maintaining plantings in unexpected places—like between the irregularly shaped stones of the firepit patio—the design preserves an organic, natural quality. The space remains very private while feeling open and inviting, proving that even small backyards can become extraordinary outdoor living environments.
This project exemplifies Elemental Design’s philosophy: intentional landscape design doesn’t have to look “overdesigned.” Instead, it should feel effortless, authentic, and perfectly suited to how you want to live. For this Carmel family, we created more than a beautiful backyard—we crafted a daily retreat that honors their heritage and enhances every moment spent outdoors.
