The Art of Stone Steps: 7 Things to Know for Your Monterey Area Landscape
The Art of Stone Steps: 7 Things to Know for Your Monterey Area Landscape
Stone steps do more than connect two levels of your yard. They set the tone for your entire outdoor space. Whether you’re navigating a hillside in Carmel Valley or creating a grand entry in Pebble Beach, the right stone steps add beauty, function, and lasting value.
At Elemental Design, we’ve been designing and installing landscape stairs across the Monterey, Salinas, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Carmel Valley area for over 30 years. Here’s what we consider for every stone step project.
Why Choose Stone Over Other Materials?
Before we get into the details, it’s worth asking: why stone?
Compared to poured concrete, wood, or pavers, natural stone offers unmatched character. No two stones are alike. Concrete can crack and stain over time. Wood rots — especially in our foggy coastal climate. Pavers can shift and look uniform in a way that feels out of place in natural settings.
Stone, on the other hand, ages gracefully. It handles heavy foot traffic, resists weathering, and only looks better with time. For high-end properties on the Monterey Peninsula, stone is the clear choice when longevity and aesthetics matter most.

What to Consider When Choosing Stone Steps for your Landscape
1. Climate & Environment
Monterey’s coastal climate is unique. Morning fog, salt air, and mild but wet winters all affect how outdoor materials perform.
We select stone with natural texture and grip to reduce slip risk on foggy mornings. We also choose varieties that stand up to salt exposure — granite and certain sandstones do this well. Softer stones like some limestones can deteriorate faster near the coast.
Our designs also account for the surrounding environment. We pair stone steps with drought-tolerant native plantings like sage, lavender, and California poppies. This keeps the look natural and water-wise.

2. Stone Selection
Matching Stone to Your Setting
The right stone makes all the difference. We often work with Santa Lucia granite, local fieldstone, and California gold flagstone. These materials blend naturally with the Monterey Peninsula landscape.
Color and Thickness
We match stone color to your home’s palette and surroundings. Earth tones — tans, warm grays, and browns — work beautifully with coastal oaks and native chaparral.
For structural integrity, we use slabs at least 2–3 inches thick. Thinner stone may look fine at first but won’t hold up on slopes or under heavy use.
Stone vs. Manufactured Alternatives
Manufactured pavers offer consistency, but they lack the depth and variation of natural stone. For our clients in Carmel and Pebble Beach, natural stone creates a sense of place that manufactured products simply can’t replicate.
3. Design & Grading
Working With the Land
Many properties in our area sit on hillsides or uneven terrain. We design stone steps that follow the natural contours of your land rather than fighting against them.
We keep risers between 6–8 inches and treads 12–18 inches deep. That’s the sweet spot for a comfortable stride. For longer runs, we like to work in a landing or built-in seating area. It gives you a place to pause and enjoy the view — and it adds a natural, inviting focal point to the design.

Curved or Straight?
Curved walkway stairs feel more organic in woodland and coastal settings. Straight runs work well for modern homes or formal entries. We tailor the layout to your home’s architecture and the natural flow of your property.
Our design process ensures every detail is planned before installation begins.
4. Drainage & Erosion
Poor drainage is the number one enemy of landscape stairs. Monterey’s winter rains can wash out poorly built steps in a single season.
We make sure to use a crushed rock base beneath each step to prevent settling, especially in Monterey’s sandy or clay soils. We also install gravel channels or French drains alongside steps to direct water away.
Every stone step project we design includes a drainage plan. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what keeps your stairs looking great for decades.

5. Aesthetic Integration
Creating a Cohesive Look
Stone steps shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. We design them as part of the larger landscape — coordinating with patios, retaining walls, and existing hardscape.
Plantings and Softscaping
We love tucking creeping thyme, dymondia, or woolly thyme between treads. These low-water groundcovers soften the stone and add texture.
Lighting
Low-voltage path lights along your steps improve safety and create a warm glow at night. We integrate lighting into the design from the start so it feels intentional, not bolted on.

6. Permits & Regulations
Coastal Commission and Local Codes
Properties near the Monterey coast may fall under California Coastal Commission jurisdiction. This can affect what you’re allowed to build and where.
Monterey County and local municipalities may require permits for steps above a certain height. Handrails are sometimes required for longer stair runs.
Environmental Protections
We’re careful to protect native oaks, Monterey pines, and coastal scrub during excavation. Our team handles permitting and compliance so you don’t have to worry about it.
7. Maintenance
Stone steps are low-maintenance, but they’re not no-maintenance.
In our foggy climate, moss and algae can build up on shaded steps. We recommend periodic cleaning or sealing to keep surfaces safe and looking fresh.
We also suggest an annual inspection for settling or shifting, especially after heavy rain seasons. Catching small issues early prevents costly repairs later.
This is another area where stone outperforms wood. Wood steps need staining, sealing, and eventual replacement. Well-installed stone steps can last a lifetime with minimal upkeep.
