Bay Area Stone Steps Design & Installation
Stone Steps Part of the Design, Not an Afterthought
Stone steps, designed with the precision of a landscape architect and the eye of a craftsperson, do something no prefabricated stair system can: they belong. They carry the visual weight of the surrounding hardscape, echo the character of the home, and negotiate the contours of the land with a quality that reads as permanence.
In the Central Coast, where properties routinely feature steep grades, outdoor stone stairs are among the most impactful elements a landscape architect can design.
At Elemental Design Group, our stone steps are designed: proportioned, positioned, and detailed as part of a complete outdoor composition. The material, the riser-to-tread ratio, the landing configuration, the integration with planted edges, retaining walls, and lighting. All of it is considered together, from the first drawing to the final installation. We provide landscape architecture and landscape design services to homeowners in Carmel, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda, Santa Cruz, and Monterey, California.

Stone Stairs That Solve the Grade & Elevate the Property
A hillside staircase is not a complicated purchase. Any contractor will give you a price. Most will even give you options: flagstone, cut stone, concrete with a stone veneer. What they will not give you is a design.
A materials supplier can source the stone. A contractor can set it in place. But a licensed landscape architect does something categorically different: she engineers the grade, anticipates the drainage, studies the architecture, and maps the way the property will actually be used, then produces a staircase that answers all of it. Not a solution that fits the site. A design that belongs to it.
Why working with a licensed landscape architect produces better outdoor stone stairs than a contractor, every single time:
- Grade engineering first — Stone steps on a California hillside are structural, not decorative. A landscape architect calculates run, rise, drainage slope, and load-bearing requirements for your specific soil conditions, ensuring steps that are safe, stable, and compliant, not just attractive.
Proportions that feel right — The relationship between riser height and tread depth determines whether stone stairs feel effortless or awkward to climb. Landscape architects design to human-scaled standards that general contractors rarely apply.
Material selection that is site-specific — Moss rock, cut bluestone, flagstone, Pennsylvania fieldstone, decomposed granite-set steppers. The right choice depends on your home’s architecture, the surrounding hardscape, the available light, and the intended feeling. It is never generic.
Integration with the full landscape — Outdoor stone stairs don’t live in isolation. They connect spaces, frame plantings, anchor retaining walls, and lead the eye. They need to be designed as part of the complete composition, not bolted onto it afterward.
Drainage and longevity — California’s wet winters and seismic conditions demand that every stone step installation is engineered, not estimated. Proper base preparation, drainage management, and mortar or dry-set specifications determine whether your stairs look the same in twenty years as they do on installation day.
From Site Study to the Final Step, We Manage Every Phase
From the first conversation to the moment a project is complete, Elemental Design Group manages every phase. We serve as the General Contractor so you never coordinate across multiple vendors.
Site Analysis & Grade Study
Every stair design begins with the land. We assess slope angle, soil stability, drainage patterns, and existing hardscape to understand exactly what the site requires before a single stone is specified.
Stone Stair Design & Detailing
Full construction drawings with precise material specifications, tread and riser dimensions, landing placements, edge conditions, and integration details. Every drawing is developed to be built from, not interpreted in the field.
Material Selection & Sourcing
We specify and source the right stone for your project, whether that is rough-cut moss rock for a naturalistic hillside stair, honed bluestone for a refined formal entry, or large-format flagstone for a wide terrace connection.
Retaining Wall Integration
Outdoor stone stairs on sloped properties often work in tandem with retaining walls. We design and install both together, so the engineering is coordinated, the aesthetic is cohesive, and the structure performs together.
Landscape Lighting Design
Stone stairs that disappear at night are a missed opportunity and a safety concern. We integrate low-voltage step lighting, path lighting, and accent lighting into the stair design from the beginning - not added on as a finishing thought.
Full Installation Oversight
Elemental Design Group manages the entire installation: contractor and materials selection, scheduling, quality oversight, and project completion. You work with one team and one standard of excellence throughout.
Work Directly with a Landscape Architect Who Understands Outdoor Stone Steps
CA Landscape Contractor License #926561 | 30+ years serving California homeowners
Stone steps are among the most technically demanding and visually consequential elements in landscape architecture. They require an understanding of grading, drainage, structural engineering, and material behavior, combined with an equally refined sense of scale, proportion, and spatial sequence. Rhadiante has designed stone stairs for properties across California’s most challenging terrain: the steep wooded lots of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the hillside estates of Saratoga and Los Altos Hills, the coastal bluffs of Monterey and Carmel, and the canyon-edge properties of San Mateo County.
The outdoor stone stairs she designs are not defaults. They are site-specific responses to the character of your land, the architecture of your home, and the way you want to move through your outdoor space.
Featured Project
Every slope has a solution. This one has a design.
Stone Steps That Connect a Property and Complete It
The answer was a custom stone staircase, designed to climb the steep remaining slope from the landscaped backyard up to the front yard and driveway level. This was not a secondary element. It was a critical connection – one that had to work structurally on a demanding grade, integrate visually with the stonework anchoring the rest of the design, and feel considered rather than merely functional.
The result is a staircase that does what the best outdoor stone stairs always do: it makes the grade feel navigable, the property feel whole, and the landscape feel designed all the way to the edge.

Stone Step & Outdoor Stair Elements We Design & Install
No two properties share the same grade, the same stone, or the same solution. These are the elements we work with.
Natural Flagstone Steps
Irregularly shaped flagstone set in a naturalistic pattern creates outdoor stairs that read as an extension of the landscape itself. Ideal for wooded, coastal, and garden settings where the stair should feel discovered rather than imposed.
Cut & Dressed Bluestone Stairs
Precise, refined, and architectural - cut bluestone stairs bring a formal quality to entry sequences, pool surrounds, and terrace connections that demands a higher level of design and craftsmanship. The result is a stair that holds its edge for decades.
Moss Rock & Boulderwork Stairs
On steep hillside grades, large moss rock steppers set into the slope create a staircase that feels as if it grew from the hillside. Properly engineered, these are among the most durable and visually powerful outdoor stairs available for California's challenging terrain.
Dry-Stack Stone Risers
A softer alternative to fully hardscaped stairs, stone risers with decomposed granite, low ground cover, or creeping thyme treads create an outdoor stair sequence that blurs the boundary between hardscape and planting.
Integrated Retaining Walls
On properties where stairs and retaining walls must work together we design them as a single engineered system. Consistent material, coordinated structure, and a unified visual language throughout.
Step Lighting
Low-voltage step lights, path illumination, and carefully placed accent lighting transform outdoor stone stairs from a daytime-only feature into a nighttime focal point. Every lighting plan is integrated into the design.

What Our Clients Say
"Elemental Design Group just finished redoing our front and back yards. Rhadiante’s design included a handsome new walkway and stone wall in our front yard and curved bluestone steps from the lower patio area to the raised garden area of our backyard. Rhadiante is truly an artist, with creative and beautiful ideas for solving the particular problems of our yard and staying within our budget."
"We have a stunning backyard thanks to Van de Voorde Elemental Design Group. People gasp when they look out our sliding glass doors and see the fountain, natural rock retaining wall, arbors, etc. When we met with Radiant she asked us what we wanted, the features, the general feel of the yard, functionality , etc. and she sketched as we talked. By the end our initial meeting we had a rough draft that provided very clear direction for drawing up full plans."
